Escape Planning
Wherever you are, it's essential you know how to escape in the event of a fire. It doesn't take long and it could save your life and the lives of those you love.
Make an Escape Plan
Public spaces and businesses all have to have Fire Action Plans displayed where people can read them.
You should make a Fire Action Plan for your home and practice it regularly.
It doesn't take long but it could save lives.
Think about:
- who's usually in the property
- how will they know there's a fire
- if there is one?
- if there are children who will help them?
- if there are elderly people, who will raise the alarm to them and help them?
- if there are people who can't see, hear or move around easily, who will help them?
Make a printable Fire Action Plan now with our interactive Fire Action Planner.
Plan A
The first choice route of escape is always through the main door (close it once everyone is out).
Plan B
If it's not safe to leave by the main door, how else could you escape?
- is there an another door you could use or a fire escape?
- could you climb out of a ground floor window?
- could you climb out of a first floor window onto a garage roof or extension and get down safely?
If you can't get out
If plan A and B aren't safe, you'll need to shelter somewhere:
- choose a room with a phone and a window that opens
- pack clothes and blankets around the door to keep smoke out
- stay by the window and shout for help
