Fight or Flight?
The safest and best thing you can do in the event of a fire in any building is to get out, stay out and get the Fire and Rescue Service out - call 999.
Here’s why:
Fire is fast
Fire spreads quickly - very quickly.
Smoke and fumes spread faster still.
Fires almost never ‘burn out’ on their own.
In a fire there is no time - make and practice a fire action plan.
Whatever else you do, don’t hang about - get out.
Fire chokes
Our homes are full of things that catch light easily, burn hotly and produce thick choking fumes.
In most cases where people die in a fire, they pass out from breathing smoke and fumes long before the actual flames get anywhere near them. Even just a couple of breaths of it can knock you out.
Smoke from house fires is toxic stuff and it gets very, very hot. Even if you do survive, it’s likely your lungs will be damaged by the hot smoke and fumes.
Smoke and fumes fill rooms from the top down - get down on the floor where the air is cleaner.
Fire is dark
When we think of fire, we immediately think of the flickering light of flames.
But because smoke and fumes build up quickly enclosed spaces, in no time at all it’s impossible to see in a house fire - even with a mask and breathing apparatus on.
If you stay in a room with a fire burning out of control, you won't be able to see to escape - get out as soon as you can.
